I paint the expression of a place; it’s the visual concept and sensory images that I recall or observe when I visit a locale. I try to identify and understand what I wish to say in my paintings, and then I begin and paint that expression. The atmosphere, color, movement and texture are recorded in paint to recreate the mood of a place observed at a certain moment. I paint subjects most intimate and familiar to me: landscapes and architecture, abstracts and floral.

Sunlight fuels my passion to create art. I am 

fascinated by the way it passes through a 

transparent flower petal, how it dances through glass, warms the top of an apple and appoints sentiment to ordinary objects. Capturing that transformation when an object is illuminated into something previously unseen is what truly inspires me. This light is what drives me to share my perception with others; and is a reminder to cherish the nuances of life.

I mostly work in oil, gouache, casein, acrylic

and egg tempera using a technique of applying many thin layers to achieve a glowing inner light in my paintings.

Inspiration for my paintings come from both internal and external sources.  Scenes from the Delaware Valley and the coast of Maine form the basis for much of my art.  Internal imaging and interpretation, however, are the critical factors which give the paintings a uniquely personal meaning.

Most importantly, I follow the painting wherever it takes me, rather than to force a preconceived idea.  During and after that journey, I will make adjustments that are artistically necessary.

"I first started my painting career as a ten-year old in the 1950’s when I took watercolor lessons from Marvin Saltzman.  A gradually developing (and undiagnosed until some years later) case of nearsightedness however diminished my interest.  (How can you paint something that you can’t see clearly?)  By the time I was outfitted with glasses, I was on my way to a career in science.  For thirty years, I taught medical students how their lungs worked and did research in pulmonary physiology and pathophysiology at the Northeastern Ohio Medical University.  Some fifty years after my first lessons, my wife Dawn and artist Joye Moon, convinced me to pick up a paintbrush again.  Along the way, I have been privileged to learn from Joye, Judith Kinsman, Dennis Rafferty, Guy Corriero, Russel Whitten, and of course my immensely talented wife."  Mike Maron

Denver-based artist Lelija Roy offers glimpses into the western landscape. Lelija’s mixed-media work expresses texture as color and color as texture. She works with acrylic paints and a long list of other water-based media pigments. Her textures combine various rice papers, lace, silk, fibers, handmade paper and metals with acrylic mediums. The painting process includes mono-printing, watermarks and numerous painting techniques. Resulting pieces can include as many as twenty layers.

Each piece expresses unique rhythms and textures of the living earth. Lelija seeks out the interconnectedness of organic and inorganic elements. These glimpses encompass: the hazy light of early morning, the wind in an aspen grove, the silent struggle of a pinion pine on a canyon wall or the rush of the waterfall.
