"Painting is a huge part of my life and I try to work several hours each day. Surrounded by sea it is natural to be influenced and inspired by such changing beauty and this I try to capture in my work.  I paint in oil, acrylic, pastel and mixed media and my subjects vary according to my passion at the time. However, I am particularly drawn to seascapes and skies as they have moved me for as long as I can remember. Creativity is a wonderful gift which I use in many ways, but art is very close to my heart and something I could not live without." - Valerie Travers

" I thank my great granddaddy for passing on the artistic genes to me; he is my guardian angel. His plain gray easel, spotted with his past smears, dots of painting, and little holes from pinning his reference materials to it is what I use; it makes me feel close to him. I still have some of his brushes, well-used, worn-out nubs that they are. One of my prized possessions is his pencil self- portrait. His favorite story told over and over when we visited him was about Van Gogh."- Jonelle McCoy

Becky Hicks grew up in the small west Texas town of Breckenridge.  She spent many of her summers and holidays on her great-grandmother's ranch, where her love for nature and all things "country" was born.  She began drawing and painting at five years old and was always encouraged by her family, friends and teachers to create art.  She knew at a very early age that she was an artist and would one day realize her dream of becoming a full time artist.

"My work is the result of imagination and nature. The style is minimalistic, abstract-figurative and has sometimes a touch of surrealism. Although the colours and the contrasts are strong , there is still a harmonic oneness."

"In my work, I aim to seize the paradox of the union of opposites, in particular the polar tension between life and death.  Nature's time is not linear, but rather cyclic, what happened once is destined to occur again.  Death is end, but also beginning.  The distant past is present in every moment, and the future has already happened.  Rather than progression, it is repetition, like a Monarch butterfly, ending at the beginning.  It happens in the place where the grape vine dies, pulled out, to be replanted in the spring.
In order to represent the connection between reality and illusion, I focus my emotions and thoughts to construct meaning, applying oil paint and glazes layer after layer, adding impressions of light.  I create inner landscapes from which exhude a metaphorical quality."

"Sunlight fuels my passion to create art. I am fascinated by the way it passes through a transparent flower petal, how it dances through glass, warms the top of an apple and appoints sentiment to ordinary objects. Capturing that transformation when an object is illuminated into something previously unseen is what truly inspires me. This light is what drives me to share my perception with others; and is a reminder to cherish the nuances of life." -

"Creating art reminds me of my childhood, when we would make up plays and do circus performances for the neighborhood. I loved sitting outside with my neighborhood buddies at night watching the fireflies and telling the most fabulous and exciting stories. Our imagination had no boundaries. When I become immersed in creating a piece, the excitement of the story unfolding before my eyes reminds me of the magic of those firefly nights. Working in clay brings out memories and feelings that I love to express in my work. I like to tell stories with my art, and the encaustic finish on the clay sculpture adds depth, and a feeling of the past. Each of my sculptures has a story that has unfolded for me, as I created the piece."-Maralyn Wilson

"The inspiration for my abstract work comes from my life experiences; travel, nature, my environment, all culminating in a magical sort of way. It is usually subconscious, and impetuous, sparked by something seemingly as trivial as a word or a feeling. I strive not to answer the question of what my images mean but to encourage the viewer's curiosity. When the work invokes the feeling of "curiouser and curiouser" (thank you Alice) then I have achieved my goal." - Laura Reed
